Post N 94 - IELTS Writing Task II

IELTS Writing -Task 1 Bar Graph.

The pie chart shows the gender distribution of students doing scientific research across a range of disciplines at a UK university in 2009.

In five of the six categories, males outnumbered females. Male students made up a particularly large proportion of the student group related to subjects related to the study of inanimate objects: physics, astronomy, and geology. The gender gap was particularly large in the field of physics, with there being five times as many male students as females.

Men and women were equally represented in subjects related to the study of living things: biology, medicine, and veterinary science. In biology, there were nearly as many men (approximately 240) as women (approximately 200). This was also true of medicine. Veterinary science was the only discipline in which women outnumbered men (roughly 110 women vs. 90 men).

Overall, the chart shows that at the university, science-related subjects continued to be male-dominated: however, women had a significant presence in fields related to medicines and the life sciences.

Post N 94

Вот если бы была фраза "according to my friend", то фраза была более уместной. Вот лишь некоторые из них - the graph shows/indicates that, it is clear from the table, as can be seen from the graph, as illustrated by the graph и так далее.

Post N93

Purpose of writing about graphs.
IELTS Task I.

a) This graph shows the average annual urban growth rate of 5 continents from 1970 to 2025. According to the graph, Africa had about 5% average annual urban growth rate in 1970 and over 4% average annual urban growth rate in 1995 and in 2025 the average annual urban growth rate is expected to be just over 3%. For Asia, the average annual urban growth rate was just over 3% in 1970 and 1995, and it was expected to be about 2% in 2025. In Europe, by contrast, the average annual urban growth rate was only about 1.5% in 1970 and it went down to about 0.5% in 1995, and in 2025 it will be less than 0.2%. In Latin America, the average annual
urban growth rate went from just under 4% in 1970 to just over 2% in 1995, and it will probably be just over 1% in 2025. In North America, the average annual urban growth rate was about 1% in 1970 and 1995 and is expected to stay the same in 2025.

b) Looking at the graph, we can see that urban growth has happened on all 5 continents since 1970 and that it is expected to continue right up to 2025. The most dramatic growth is in Africa, Asia and Latin America because these continents have experienced the most development in industrialization since 1970, while Europe and North America show less increase probably because they already started being more urbanized. In developing countries, many people from the countryside are attracted to the cities to look for work and better opportunities in health and education, but this rapid urbanization is causing many problems and needs to be controlled.

c) The graph shows that since 1970 there has been considerable urban growth in all 5 continents presented and that this trend is expected to continue at least until 2025. However, the rate for each continent has not been the same. The developing countries of Africa, Asia and Latin America experienced the most dramatic growth rates in 1975, with Africa having around 5% per annum, Latin America just over 4% and Asia over 3%. In 1995, these rates decreased to just over 4% in Africa and down to about 2% for Latin America, but Asia remained the same. This growth rate is expected to decrease by about 1% for all three continents but the year 2025.
Meanwhile, North America is expected to maintain its growth rate of 1% p.a. over the entire period, while Europe, having started the period at about 1.5% growth rate, is expected to reduce this to only about 0.2% by 2025.

Post N 92

IELTS Wriitng (Part 1)- General Module.

IELTS GURU on Opinion Essay (Part 1)

Ex. – What do you think are the most important qualities of a good boss? How will technology change people’s life in the future? Which factors promote job satisfaction?

Если, по вашему мнению, на вопрос “What is the best place to live?”

IELTS GURU on Participle  - How to use it in IELTS Speaking and Writing.

Example – Known for his unique style, Chekhov rose to prominence and fortune.
-        Built in the last decade of the 18th century, this castle is a famous landmark.
-        Unable to any longer, my friend dropped to his knees and started sighing.

- This letter, written by a great playwright Bernard Shaw while he was on vacation, is a representation of his mastery and wit.

IELTS Writing Sample (Task 1 -Table )

The table shows the results of a survey of 200 adolescents and their parents in which they were asked whether parents should exercise control over a range of adolescent life choices.

Overall, parents said that wanted significantly more control over their children than did the adolescents surveyed. The areas where parents wanted most control were “how adolescents spend their free time” and “what friends they make”. Roughly three out of four parents wanted to place restrictions on these areas, whereas only one in five children felt this measure was needed. The biggest conflict of opinion concerned young people’s choice of friends, with nearly 80 percent of mothers believing that should exercise control and only 17 percent of girls agreeing.

In addition, slightly more than half of mothers and fathers thought that career choices should be restricted, while the percentage of girls and girls constituted only 18 and 21 percent respectively…..

IELTS Speaking Sample (Part 1)

Topic - Routine

- DO you ever do boring, repetitive things?
- Yeah, most certainly I do. Like any other human, I have responsibilities and tasks to do which can add boredom to my life.

- How often do you have to do routine things?
- Well, I wouldn’t say that I do them too often. More like, I do them when the situation dictates so. Twice or thrice a week at most.

- How do you feel about doing routine things?
- In general, I have a very healthy attitude to such things as household chores or school assignments. I try not to make a big deal out of it. Though, sometimes, I have mixed feelings: one the one hand, it can get really boring…boring enough to drive you insane, but on the hand, I know that you can learn a lot from it – it builds character and teaches you how to overcome difficulties.

- What was the most boring thing you have ever had to do?
- Well, it was having to pick strawberries back in my school years. You see, my grandma had this huge farm with acres of land. One summer, I had to spend interminable hours picking ripe berries. Well, if you ask me…my answer would be….TEDIOUS and mind-numbing))) I would rather not do it ever again. That is the reason i don't like strawberries. I am simply fed up))

Run-On Sentence

д. К примеру – “This practice is useful for many people in terms of health benefits, it is also conducive to alleviating stress”. Даже банальный союз “and” can make the difference.

Еще пример - He can speak five languages, she cannot even put two words together".

IELTS GURU on Dangling Modifier.

В примере "by looking at the graph" - не ясно, кто же именно смотрит на график. Consumption смотрит?
By looking at the graph, ONE can see that .....

Еще пример - Having finished the process, the bricks are then taken to a heating furnace , where they are kept for at least 24 hours. Having finished the processed, the WORKERS take the bricks to ....

IELTS Speaking Sample Answer (Part 1)

- Have you ever a had a part-time job?
- Well, actually, I have. A couple of years ago I was working part-time for a local newspaper “IELTS Tribune”. It wasn’t long, but I guess it still counts.

- Why did you choose to do that job?
- I would not say I chose to work there. Actually, it was more like a lucky coincidence. In the summer, I needed to make some extra money, and a friend of mine needed a columnist for his paper. This is how i ended up working there.

- What did you do there?
- The job mainly revolved around writing articles and editing texts. Plus, I had to do some filing and research.

- Did you like that job?
- I’d be lying if I said no. Even though it was part-time, I still got a lot out of it. This temporary employment was useful in terms of getting some hands-on experience in a real professional environment. Not to mention the fact that I was able to build some name for myself.

- What did you learn while doing this job?
- I would probably say “multi-tasking”. Prior to the job, it had never occurred to me that I would have to do so many different things during just one day -like typing, interviews, editing, and researching. So, I learned to budget my time and set my priorities.

On IELTS Listening - Post N 83

Idiom of the Day.

"By the skin of one's teeth" - my personal all-time favorite, which can be a great idiomatic replacement for "barely". Pretty much this phrase means that you just manage to do smth by the smallest margin. Imagine your teeth have skin? Nuh, they don't. Hence, the idiom.

Example 1 - I had not studied for the exam. So, I just managed to pass it by the skin of my teeth.

Example 2 - The visiting team was really strong. We secured the well-deserved victory by the skin of our teeth.

On Essay Conclusions (IELTS Writing Part 2)  Post N 80

Подборка в файле очень неплохая, но напомню, что в нем все же присутствуют "неакадемизмы" в виде использованных "you, a lot of, but".

IELTS GURU on Essay Conclusions (Part 1)  Post N 79

Body parts.

A Memory Flashback)); My high school teacher, Mrs. Schoemaker, always told me - "In your introduction tell what your essay WILL be about. In the body paragraphs, tell me what your essay is about. In conclusion, tell what your essay WAS about". Kudos, Mrs. Shoemaker.

Conclusion.

IELTS GURU on Solutions Essay (IELTS Writing Task 2)           Post N 78

Causes and Solutions Essay
- to address the issue of poverty is to ..
-to go about the problem of
- a feasible approach
-one possible way to ameliorate  smth
- a viable option is to
- to tackle the problem of smth

IELTS Writing Sample (Task 1) - Post N75

The flow chart shows what typically occurs as a consequence of deforestation. When trees are removed, there are four immediate effects, which eventually result in flooding, degraded vegetation and a loss of biodiversity.

One immediate effect is seen with soil which has been compacted by heavy equipment. The resulting hard, ‘baked’ soil contributes to the run off of rain water and, eventually, flooding.

Another immediate consequence of logging is a reduction in the number of roots holding the soil together. This leads to soil erosion. As a consequence, the quality and variety of vegetation are compromised.

The third immediate effect is burning, both deliberate and as a consequence of an increased risk of forest fires. The waste that remains after logging is destroyed and the microorganisms that feed on this material are lost. This leads to degraded vegetation.

The final immediate consequence is a reduction in the amount of moisture plants return to the air. Because there is less moisture in the air, there is less precipitation an increased incidence of drought. This too reduces growth and ultimately results in degraded vegetation and a loss of biodiversity.

More on Homophones - Post N74

Homophones can be very tricky to an untrained ear. Let alone trying to differentiate the fine nuances in meaning. Here is some food for thought.

1) heir (наследник) and air (воздух) are pronounced the same. So, how can we tell the difference? Context, of course. Very often, if not always, context is king in English sentences.

Harry Potter was once thought to be the heir of Slytherin)) little did they know)

2) cereal (хлопья) and serial (серийный).
You ever wondered why cereal boxes do not have serial numbers?
Or, maybe why serial killers do not include cereal in their menu?

He felt anguish in the morning

The Day of national mourning was declared yesterday

Idiom of the Day -Post N73

"Money to burn"

Jack is mighty rich. I think that even if he was buying a new car each month, his bank account would barely feel it.

He leads a very posh and extravagant life often buying fancy things and jewelry.

Post N72

“Goose down is often used for insulation purposes” – простое предложение… “It is a good thing that he ducked. Otherwise he would have been hurt” – если идти “путем утки”, то смысла нет почти никакого, но если по пути “homograph” картинка предельно ясна.

Homographs.

IELTS GURU - IELTS Speaking Sample (Part 2)

Talk about an Internet site or a portal that you find useful/like

What is your favorite Internet site?
How long have you been using it for?
What do you use it for and why do you like it?
How can it be improved?

I will get the ball rolling by saying that the nature of my work requires that I use the internet every day, so it is small wonder that there are many sites which I use and like, but i would definitely single out Wikipedia – a wonderful site that offers a wealth of interesting and diverse information on a great variety of topics.

It must have been about 5 years ago when I discovered this digital wonder for myself. I was doing some research when I happened to come across an article in Wikipedia which won me over right away. And I would say that I have been a voracious reader and an avid fan of Wikipedia ever since because it provides wonderful insights into great many subjects ranging from pop culture, history, autobiographies of celebs and so on and so forth. If you want to find something – just look it up in Wiki.

To elaborate further, I would add that the greatest things about the site are its functionality and the user-friendly layout, which are simply second to none. All the information is presented in such a fashion that one can find everything in a matter of seconds. On top of that, it has in-text incorporated links that can take you to other related articles which you might have never even considered trying. I sometimes get carried away and spend hours on end surfing the pages – so captivating they are!

Admittedly, the site DOES have its minuses like, for instance, not all the information there is 100% verified because anyone can upload some facts and make changes to the page entries. Even though the moderators monitor the quality of the content, the sheer volume of the data available there makes it virtually impossible to check every single piece of information. So, maybe were I given a free hand I would tighten the rules that regulate how a person can change entries there – I guess only registered users should be able to edit the articles.

Как-то так)))) we do it like the GURU

IELTS GURU On IELTS Task 1 (Mixed Type)

The line graph shows average disposable income for three different age groups from 2000 to 2010. The table gives the percentage increase in sales for six different products at three-year intervals from 2001 to 2010. Seen together, the figures suggest a link between the disposable income of different age groups and how well certain products sell.

The disposable income of young people in the UK between the ages of fifteen and twenty-four peaked in 2004 and reached another high point in 2007 before falling sharply. Sales of products typically enjoyed by young people, trainers and video games, showed a similar pattern, with sales of both products increasing sharply by 2004 (5% and 6% respectively).

The disposable income of the 35-44 age group peaked in 2008 after reaching its second highest point in 2004. Sales of business suits, books and children’s toys – all items that people of this age group might be expected to buy – also peaked in the third quarter of the decade, with a particularly strong growth in sales of toys (8%).

For people aged 65-74, disposable income remained roughly constant. Not surprisingly, sales of reading glasses also remained steady throughout the period.
Overall, the figures show that the sales performance of different types of products may be influenced by the disposable income available to different sectors of the population.

IELTS GURU on Providing Examples and Evidence in IELTS Writing

Практически все задания IELTS Writing (Task 2) просят дать какие-то examples and evidence drawn from you’re your knowledge or experience to support your position.

In conclusion, co-education is conducive to students’ growth in such aspects as research and presentation skills.

А личные примеры могут быть про отдельные случаи или личности Ганди, Эйзенхауэр, Стив Джобс, the USSR collapse, Shuttle and Apollo space programs.

IELTS GURU on Reading

Cambridge series IELTS – William Henry Perkin - “The Man who Invented the synthetic Dye”.
