IELTS GURU on Participle  - How to use it in IELTS Speaking and Writing.

Example – Known for his unique style, Chekhov rose to prominence and fortune.
-        Built in the last decade of the 18th century, this castle is a famous landmark.
-        Unable to any longer, my friend dropped to his knees and started sighing.

- This letter, written by a great playwright Bernard Shaw while he was on vacation, is a representation of his mastery and wit.

IELTS Writing Sample (Task 1 -Table )

The table shows the results of a survey of 200 adolescents and their parents in which they were asked whether parents should exercise control over a range of adolescent life choices.

Overall, parents said that wanted significantly more control over their children than did the adolescents surveyed. The areas where parents wanted most control were “how adolescents spend their free time” and “what friends they make”. Roughly three out of four parents wanted to place restrictions on these areas, whereas only one in five children felt this measure was needed. The biggest conflict of opinion concerned young people’s choice of friends, with nearly 80 percent of mothers believing that should exercise control and only 17 percent of girls agreeing.

In addition, slightly more than half of mothers and fathers thought that career choices should be restricted, while the percentage of girls and girls constituted only 18 and 21 percent respectively…..

IELTS Speaking Sample (Part 1)

Topic - Routine

- DO you ever do boring, repetitive things?
- Yeah, most certainly I do. Like any other human, I have responsibilities and tasks to do which can add boredom to my life.

- How often do you have to do routine things?
- Well, I wouldn’t say that I do them too often. More like, I do them when the situation dictates so. Twice or thrice a week at most.

- How do you feel about doing routine things?
- In general, I have a very healthy attitude to such things as household chores or school assignments. I try not to make a big deal out of it. Though, sometimes, I have mixed feelings: one the one hand, it can get really boring…boring enough to drive you insane, but on the hand, I know that you can learn a lot from it – it builds character and teaches you how to overcome difficulties.

- What was the most boring thing you have ever had to do?
- Well, it was having to pick strawberries back in my school years. You see, my grandma had this huge farm with acres of land. One summer, I had to spend interminable hours picking ripe berries. Well, if you ask me…my answer would be….TEDIOUS and mind-numbing))) I would rather not do it ever again. That is the reason i don't like strawberries. I am simply fed up))

Run-On Sentence

д. К примеру – “This practice is useful for many people in terms of health benefits, it is also conducive to alleviating stress”. Даже банальный союз “and” can make the difference.

Еще пример - He can speak five languages, she cannot even put two words together".

IELTS GURU on Dangling Modifier.

В примере "by looking at the graph" - не ясно, кто же именно смотрит на график. Consumption смотрит?
By looking at the graph, ONE can see that .....

Еще пример - Having finished the process, the bricks are then taken to a heating furnace , where they are kept for at least 24 hours. Having finished the processed, the WORKERS take the bricks to ....

IELTS Speaking Sample Answer (Part 1)

- Have you ever a had a part-time job?
- Well, actually, I have. A couple of years ago I was working part-time for a local newspaper “IELTS Tribune”. It wasn’t long, but I guess it still counts.

- Why did you choose to do that job?
- I would not say I chose to work there. Actually, it was more like a lucky coincidence. In the summer, I needed to make some extra money, and a friend of mine needed a columnist for his paper. This is how i ended up working there.

- What did you do there?
- The job mainly revolved around writing articles and editing texts. Plus, I had to do some filing and research.

- Did you like that job?
- I’d be lying if I said no. Even though it was part-time, I still got a lot out of it. This temporary employment was useful in terms of getting some hands-on experience in a real professional environment. Not to mention the fact that I was able to build some name for myself.

- What did you learn while doing this job?
- I would probably say “multi-tasking”. Prior to the job, it had never occurred to me that I would have to do so many different things during just one day -like typing, interviews, editing, and researching. So, I learned to budget my time and set my priorities.
